Word Camp 2007…A Little Jealous

OK, I admit it…my name is Becki and I’m a geek. I’m not a closet geek either, but one who embraces my geekiness, maintains a geek-tionary and someone who gets “hot” when reviewing open source programs.

About two months ago, I told Sally, a good friend of mine and fellow introvert, about a Geek Fest called Word Camp 2007, which happened to be in her neck of the woods, San Francisco. Sally decided to purchase her ticket post haste, while I searched for the best airfare which happened to be $550.00 which was a little out of my budget at the time. So I left my green hat of envy at the door and encouraged Sallly to go without me (which wasn’t that hard ;) ). To my surprise, Sallly turned geek…read more about it at her blog.

She sent a You Tube video clip of her local news which highlighted a bit from Word Camp. If you look closely you can see her at the end of the clip.

Get geek-a-fied!

The Internet Crashed

Do you think I could use this as my reason for not posting lately?

Breaking News: All Online Data Lost After Internet Crash

No Senseless Drivel Today

Wow! I was reading this article today Singing salesman makes Cowell’s jaw drop. I’m inspired and impressed…and even cried a little! The article does not state that Paul Potts is an introvert, but with the modesty he displays, I truly believe that he is.

Paul has overcome all sorts of adversity including a tumor, a shattered collarbone and a burst appendix. This is truly one amazing story.

Please take just a moment to view his performance. You’ll be impressed I’m sure!

Introverts Are More Likely To Induldge In Deviant Computer Activity

I came across an article titled: Introverted IT students more inclined to cyber-crime recently and was quite intrigued. Towards the beginning of the article we are hit with:

The result might seem unsurprising, given the stereotypical image of computer geeks as socially inadequate.

What shocks me most is that this article and “research” is based solely on 77 students who responded to an anonymous questionnaire. Here is yet another piece of “research” that the media and other extroverts will use to further the introvert stereotype.

What are your thoughts?

Cho Seung-Hui: A Bad Rap for Introverts?

I’m not even fully set up, but I had to comment about Cho Seung-Hui.

My best friend lives in Roanoke, which is just up the street from Blacksburg. I’ve traveled by the campus myself numerous times when visiting her. Blacksburg is a college town, quiet and utterly unassuming. The multiple murders took the campus, town, state and country by surprise. The incident is devastating to America. My heart and sympathies go out to each and every person affected by this tragedy.

The one thing that strikes me odd about Cho Seung-Hui is that he has been frequently referred to by the media as “a loner”, “kept to himself”, “not very social”, “difficult to understand” and the list goes on. I have no sympathy for Cho Seung-Hui himself, however I do hold issue with the labels applied to introverts via Cho Seung-Hui and the Virginia Tech Massacre.

Introversion is seen as something that is “out of the norm” and quite truthfully “weird”. These stereotypes continue to affect introverts each and every day. Just because an individual is an introvert, it does not mean that he/she is plotting the next big mass murder, especially because introverts do not corner the market in this “chosen” path. However with the stereotypes given to these diabolical individuals, it’s no wonder that the world of extroverts around us equate us as such. Don’t get me wrong, there are many introverts who are so drawn inward that they find it hard to cope with day to day problems and issues. But even the biggest extrovert experiences these matters on occasion.

So what’s the solution?
